Austin, TX -- Five strategic goals related to the future of The Bugle Boy listening room in La Grange and the Bugle Boy Foundation were settled on after a strategic planning forum hosted by the Foundation's Board of Directors in May with 17 community leaders.
Building an endowment of $5 million to support Bugle Boy programming, increasing local and regional attendance and support, raising money sufficient to support increased funding for operations, increasing support for creative arts programs for area school students, and raising capital sufficient for the Foundation to acquire the land, building and equipment of The Bugle Boy: These were the goals deemed most important.
At the May 21 forum, hosted by the Board of Directors of the Bugle Boy Foundation, facilitators were Christian Smith, the past UCLA Assistant Vice Chancellor who helped write the Strategic Plan for the University of Texas and currently serves as Special Consultant to Travis County Commissioner Court Central Campus Planning, and Pebbles Wadsworth, past Executive Director of the Performing Arts Center at UCLA and at UT Austin.
Participants were 15 community leaders who discussed such issues as The Bugle Boy's reputation for presenting original music of the highest quality in a clean, quiet, friendly, respectful, and smoke-free venue as well as affordability of concerts and ideas for increasing attendance.
The Bugle Boy Foundation Board will make plans to implement strategies to attain the goals over the next five years. Foundation president David Vogel said, "We're gratified by the interest in The Bugle Boy expressed by all those who attended the forum. Their input is crucial as we strive to make The Bugle Boy an even more valuable community asset, supporting and fostering music and the arts in rural Texas."
The Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, supported by private and public contributions. The mission of the Bugle Boy Foundation is to provide a premier listening room venue for affordable public performances by professional artists of original works of diverse genres for the enrichment of Fayette County, Texas residents and visitors. The Foundation supports music education by sponsoring artist-led creative arts programs for the benefit of area students.
La Grange Mayor Janet Moerbe, a forum participant, said, "Our community is very fortunate to have the unique venue that the Bugle Boy has to offer. It is an asset that has brought many visitors to La Grange. I am impressed by the dedication that this group has toward the future success of this establishment."
Bugle Boy founder and executive director Lane Gosnay added, "This meeting was extremely validating. The Bugle Boy pays dividends to the community at-large that escape the standard bottom-line accounting method, and participants agreed that pooling resources and individual talents are necessary for sustainability. It is my hope that we will become a model for other rural communities wanting to enrich lives through music."

Listening in La Grange If you enjoy live music, you'll find an intriguing alternative to loud clubs or huge concert venues in a listening room called The Bugle Boy, in La Grange, some 60 miles east of Austin. The Bugle Boy is housed in a former World WarII barracks and named after the Andrews Sisters' 1941 hit song. Don't let the retro vibe fool you; the music presented here ranges from jazz and blues to rock and country. The common denominator: The musicians all write and perform their own songs. Thanks to the skills of a professional sound engineer and a house rule that prohibits talking during sets, the acoustics here are outstanding. Owner Lane Gosnay opened The Bugle Boy four years ago to present established entertainers as well as nurture local talent. Besides weekly Friday and Saturday shows, she holds a monthly Sunday Showcase in which 12 artists perform for a panel of judges and a supportive audience. The winners perform at The Bugle Boy's anniversary party each January (January 17, 2009). Austin-based Elizabeth Wills, who's known for her acoustic pop-folk music, says it's one of her favorite venues. “There's nothing else like it in Texas,” she adds. “The audience interaction is wonderful—it feels like you're in someone's living room and on stage at the same time. It's a positive, creative environment … I think it makes the music better.” see the article
